CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina sophomore midfielder Lori Chalupny (St. Louis, Mo.) notched her first career hat trick and was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player as the No. 1 Tar Heels raced past No. 13 Nebraska 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field in women's soccer action. No. 8 Duke and No. 24 Kentucky played to a 2-2 tie in the first game of the afternoon as the Nike Carolina Classic concluded its second day.
Chalupny, who scored only three goals in all of her freshman year, has six goals in her past three matches and has scored the game-winning goal in each of those victories over Washington, Kentucky and Nebraska. Chalupny was one of five Tar Heels named to the All-Tournament Team as she was joined by teammates Jessica Maxwell, Lindsay Tarpley, Carmen Watley and Kacey White.
Chalupny powered the Tar Heels' offense early in the game as she scored two goals just 3:29 apart in the 17th and 20th minutes of the match. On her first goal she pounced on a turnover and finished into the right side from just inside the 18. Her second goal came on a one-timer into the top shelf as she took passes from Mary McDowell and Lindsay Tarpley for her fifth goal of the year. Shortly before halftime the Tar Heels made it 3-0 as freshman midfielder Elizabeth Guess scored her first career goal. She headed in a cross by Anne Morrell after Morrell received a pass from Leea Murphy.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Alyssa Ramsey tallied her second goal of the season as she one-timed a pass from Tarpley intot he left side off the fingertips of Nebraska goalkeeper Katie Wright, who had 10 saves in her first career start. Kacey White also assisted on the goal.
In the 72nd minutes, Chalupny completed the hat trick off Tarpley's third assist of the contest, the first time the sophomore forward has assisted three times in a match in her college career. Tarpley finished the scoring herself with a goal off assists by Chalupny and Maggie Tomecka at 74:15.
UNC outshot Nebraska 28-2 and finished with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. UNC will return to action next weekend in the Houston College Challenge playing Texas Friday night and Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at Meyer Park in Spring, Texas.
