Tar Heels Take Temple Title, Improve To 4-0

PHILADELPHIA - The North Carolina field hockey team won its 10th Temple Invitational title in 11 years with a 6-1 win over the host Owls Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Tar Heels improved to 4-0 with the win, while Temple fell to 3-1

Freshman Rachel Dawson, a midfielder from Berlin, N.J., scored three goals for her first career hat trick and junior Kelsey Keeran added two. Junior Katy Potter scored the team's sixth goal.

Keeran's goals opened the scoring. The first, assisted by freshman Laree Beans, came with 27:59 to play in the first half. Keeran's second goal, assisted by junior Laura Douglas, came at the 17:50 mark. Dawson's first goal, assisted by Douglas, put UNC up 3-0 with 11 minutes to play before halftime.

Forty seconds before the break, Temple got on the board with a goal by Rachel Barber, assisted by Haley Dervinis.

Dawson's second goal came with 27:45 remaining, assisted by junior Kerry Falgowski. She scored her third with 18:20 to play on an assist by Douglas. Potter's goal came with 9:10 remaining in the game.

UNC goalkeeper Katy Tran, a redshirt sophomore who has allowed just two goals in this season's four games, made four saves.

The Tar Heels' next game is on Wednesday at Davidson. Carolina plays its first home game of the season on Sunday against James Madison.
