CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team hosts No. 2 Wake Forest Saturday in a battle of the nation's top two squads. The game marks the third consecutive meeting between the Atlantic Coast Conference rivals that has been a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown.
Game time at Francis E. Henry Stadium is 1 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.
UNC is 12-0 overall (2-0 ACC) and off to its best start since 1995, when the Tar Heels finished the season undefeated. Carolina has outscored its opponents 38-5 and recorded eight shutouts in its 12 games. Senior forward Kelsey Keeran leads the team in scoring with 14 goals and an assist for 29 points and junior forward Karen Mann is next with seven goals and one assist. Fourteen Tar Heels have scored points for the team this season.
Wake Forest is 10-1 (1-1 ACC), with its only loss of the season coming in overtime to Duke. The Demon Deacons are led by senior Kelly Dostal, who has 16 goals and nine assists on the year. Freshman Tamar Meijer has 14 goals and one assist.
Saturday's game is the season's designated ACC meeting. The teams will also play on Oct. 10, but that game will not count in the league standings.
Carolina leads the series 25-11-4 but Wake has won the last seven meetings and 10 of the last 12. Last season Wake won 2-1 in overtime in Winston-Salem on Sept. 26 and 2-1 in Chapel Hill on Oct. 19. In both games, the Deacons were No. 1 and Carolina was No. 2.
The Tar Heels are at Henry Stadium again on Sunday for the final home game of the regular season. Carolina hosts Radford at 1 p.m. and will celebrate Senior Day, honoring the team's five seniors, before the game.
