Seven Tar Heels Earn All-Region Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seven North Carolina field hockey players have earned all-region honors as announced Tuesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Senior Kelsey Keeran, junior Katy Tran and sophomore Rachel Dawson were named first-team All-South Region, while seniors Laura Douglas, Kerry Falgowski, Carey Fetting-Smith and Katy Potter were named to the second team.
As members of the first team, Keeran, Tran and Dawson are now in the running for All-America honors.
All seven Carolina players were starters for the 2004 squad, which finished the season 21-2 with an Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the most wins by a Tar Heel team since 1996.
Keeran, a forward from Sunbury, Ohio, led the team in scoring with 39 points on 19 goals and an assist. She had nine game-winners during the season and was named All-ACC and ACC Tournament MVP.
Tran, a goalkeeper from Grantville, Pa., finished the season with an 0.78 goals-against average, allowing just 17 goals in 23 games. She earned All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament honors.
Dawson, a midfielder/back from Berlin, N.J., was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament. She finished the season with 22 points on seven goals and eight assists.
Douglas, a midfielder from Whagarei, New Zealand, earned all-region honors for the second year in a row. She led the team in assists with 13 and scored seven goals for 27 points, second on the team.
Falgowski, a forward/midfielder from Landenberg, Pa., scored six goals and added three assists while starting every game.
Fetting-Smith, a back/midfielder from Baltimore, Md., started all 21 games in which she appeared and finished the season with 10 points on two goals and six assists. She shared team captain duties with Falgowski.
Potter, a back/midfielder, also earned All-ACC honors. She started all 23 games and had four assists.
Players were recognized from five regions: Midatlantic, Mideast, Northeast, South and West. With 16-member first and second teams from each region, a total of 160 players were honored.
