CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina volleyball team improved to 16-11 on the season and 9-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 30-20, 30-17, 30-18, win over visiting NC State Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels were led by Katie Wright and Molly Pyles, who finished with 17 kills and 15 kills respectively. Senior Caroline deRoeck moved to third on the all-time Carolina single-season dig list with 16.
Game one was a rout from the start, as Carolina jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The Wolfpack squad (10-17, 0-13 ACC) was unable to use the strong blocking that kept them in the first match between the two schools due to its inability to keep the ball in play. The visitors committed 10 attack errors to four for UNC, and the Tar Heels won the game going away, 30-20.
Despite an improved showing from the Wolfpack, the Tar Heels continued to pour it on in game two. Play was tight early before an 8-2 Carolina run moved the score from 7-5 to 15-7. UNC would lead by as many as 14 before putting it away, 30-17. The Tar Heels exhibited pinpoint accuracy in the frame, recording 17 kills on 28 swings with only three errors for a .500 hitting percentage.
Game three featured the most competitive volleyball of the night, as the teams played back and forth for most of the early action. But with the score knotted at 9-all, UNC went on an 11-4 run, and NC State would get no closer than six, as the Tar Heels clinched the match with a 30-18 win.
The Tar Heels hit a season-best .372 for the match and ran their unbeaten streak to four matches, all of which have been sweeps. Carolina travels to Blacksburg, Va., for the first time in ACC play on Saturday at 6 p.m.
