CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Three outstanding high school field hockey players signed letters of intent with North Carolina during the early signing period, coach Karen Shelton has announced. Leslie Barrows, Anne Marie Janus and Alli Tanner will join the UNC team in August for the 2004 season.
"We're very excited to have these three players join our program and represent this great institution," Shelton said. "They bring great speed, enthusiasm and a burning desire to excel. All three of these young women will have an immediate impact on our ability to be successful this fall."
Barrows, from Easton, Pa., was named Best Offensive Player at Easton Area High in her sophomore through senior years. She earned all-area honors in her junior and senior years and served as team co-captain as a senior. The school record holder for career goals with 55, Barrows also has lettered in softball, swimming and track. In softball, she has served as the team co-captain and earned all-division honors at shortstop.
Janus, from Forty-Fort, Pa., earned regional All-America honors in her junior and senior seasons at Wyoming Valley West High and all-state honors in her sophomore through senior years. She played for state championship teams in her sophomore and senior years and ranks eighth in high school field hockey history with 134 career goals. A member of the 2004 U.S. Under-20 team, she also has played for the Under-16 and Under-19 teams.
Tanner, from New Providence, Pa., earned All-America, all-state and all-conference honors as a senior at Solanco High. A four-year letterwinner, she has participated in U.S. Field Hockey B Camp and in the National Futures Tournament, as well as the Junior Olympics. She also competes in the pole vault and the 4x400 relay for her school's track and field team.
