Five From Carolina Earn Academic Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Five North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the 2003 Division I National Academic Squad, as announced Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). To earn a spot on the team, a player must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better.
Tar Heels named to the 2003 squad were Amber Chambers, Rachel Dawson, Kerry Falgowski, Heather Kendell and Katy Tran. Chambers and Falgowski were juniors in eligibility during the 2003 season, Tran a sophomore and Dawson and Kendall freshmen.
Chambers, who is working toward a double major in psychology and exercise and sport science, played in 19 games last season, making one start and scoring two goals. Dawson, who is enrolled in the General College, was voted the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year after scoring a team-high 19 goals and starting all 22 games. Falgowski, a biology major with a minor in chemistry, started all 22 games and totaled seven goals and four assists for 18 points. Kendell, who is enrolled in the General College, did not see action in 2003 and will count the year as a redshirt season. Tran, working toward a double major in biology and exercise and sport science, was UNC's starting goalkeeper in all 22 games and earned second-team All-South Region honors.
The 2003 National Academic Squad includes 503 players from 74 Division I teams. Among other ACC teams, Duke equalled UNC with five players on the team, Maryland had four, and Virginia and Wake Forest each had two.
The Tar Heels finished the 2003 season 16-6, falling in the first round of NCAA Tournament play.
