Carolina Golfers Tied For 22nd Place At NCAA Championship

Hot Springs, Va. - Carolina's men's golf team is tied for 22nd place with a 14-over-par 294 total after the first round of the NCAA Championships. California, which fired a one-under 279, leads the field of 30 teams. Brigham Young is one stroke back at even par 280 while Texas Christian is third at 281 and Auburn and Kentucky are tied for fourth place at three-over 283.
Jeff Hood of California grabbed the individual lead firing a five-under 65. Kevin Kisner of Georgia and Adam Meyer of Texas Christian are one shot back at 66 in a tie for second place. Indiana's Jeff Overton and UNLV's Ryan Moore, who are both playing as individuals, are tied for fourth place at three-under 67.
Sophomore Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., led the Tar Heels firing a one-over 71 and is in a tie for 30th place. Martin Ureta, a freshman from Santiago, Chile, carded a three-over 73 which put him in a tie for 65th place. Junior Matt Crenshaw, from Burlington, N.C., posted a 74 and is tied for 88th place while senior Dustin Bray, from Asheboro, N.C. and sophomore Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, both tallied a 76 and are tied for 121st place.
The 72-hole event continues through Friday and is being played at the Homestead Resort's Cascades Course which features a par 70, 6,679-yard layout. After 54 holes, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and the top six individuals not on those 15 teams. Wednesday's second round begins at 7 a.m. with the Tar Heels teeing off the 10th tee beginning at 1:30 p.m.
