Carolina Volleyball Falls to Nation's Top Team

The University of North Carolina volleyball team dropped its final match of the GlaxoSmithKline UNC Volleyball Classic to No. 1-ranked Minnesota Saturday night, 30-24, 30-22, 30-12. Molly Pyles, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Tar Heels with 13 kills.
Carolina played its most competitive game of the match in game one, as Caroline deRoeck notched 12 of her 18 digs in the frame. Minnesota was ahead the whole way, leading by as many as eight at 27-19, until UNC made a 4-1 run punctuated by a block from Katie Wright and Pyles. The Golden Gophers would win the last two points, however, and took the game 30-24.
Game two was more of the same as Minnesota led throughout and took the game, 30-22. The Golden Gophers were led by tournament MVP Erin Martin who finished the match was 22 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Minnesota made quick work of the Tar Heels in the final game, as the team hit .581 and committed just one error on 31 swings.
UNC will now turn its attention to league play, as it opens the Atlantic Coast Conference slate at Duke on Tuesday.
Joining Pyles and Martin on the all-tournament team were Paula Gentil and Lindsey Taatjes of Minnesota, Rebeca Pazo and Rebecca Kainz of Rice, and Krista Houseman of Loyola Marymount. Minnesota was the tournament champion, finishing with a 3-0 record. Rice was second at 2-1, followed by Carolina (1-2) and LMU (0-3).
