Throughout the season, members of the UNC rowing team will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at the Carolina program and the experience of being a varsity athlete at UNC. This installment, the second of the 2004-05 school year, is by Terry McCloskey, a senior from Charlotte, N.C.
When you think about college in the fall, you think of football games, gorgeous weather, and time spent with your friends. Our team has been able to enjoy all of these things the past couple of days. At last Saturday's football game, our team was honored as the featured student-athletes of the week. We got to go out onto the field, and Emily Dondero even "caught" a football pass. It was very exciting, and was capped off by a win for our football team. The rest of the weekend was spent resting our sore bodies from last week which was our first full-load workout week.
This week has been used to prepare us for our race against Duke this Saturday. The mornings have been chillier than normal, and we have increased the mount of conditioning we are doing. We are trying to get our bodies prepared to do long-distance races. Also, the rowers have been taking turns going out in pairs because we will be racing pairs as well as fours at Duke. It's always fun to watch the rowers go out in pairs because there is no coxswain and they must steer and motivate themselves!
Our time on the water has been spent doing lots of technique, especially concentrating on the finish. Every day has been gorgeous; it is nice to see the sun out after so much rain the past couple of weeks. And, it hasn't been too hot! All of the varsity team is really enjoying getting to know the novices who have already progressed to rowing by fours. As we look toward the race on Saturday, we are all excited to get back to racing and see our hard work from the summer pay off. It's going to be lots of fun. Stay tuned next week to hear about the racing!!!
From Coxswain to Bow,
~Terry
