After a 55-minute delay due to a gas leak at Charlotte's Halton Arena, the University of North Carolina volleyball team improved to 4-1 Tuesday night with a three-game victory over the home-standing 49ers, 30-22, 30-28, 30-23. Junior setter McKenzie Byrd led the Tar Heels with her first career double-double, notching 36 assists and 11 digs.
UNC set the tone for the match with a dominant defensive performance in game one. They held the 49ers to a hitting percentage of .022 in the game and .086 for the match. In addition to Byrd, two other Tar Heels finished with double-figure digs - senior Caroline deRoeck (16) and junior Taylor Rayfield (15).
