CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Three former Tar Heels have been named to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey 25th Anniversary Team, announced recently by the NCAA as part of the organization's celebration of the 25th anniversary of women's sports championships. Leslie Lyness, Cindy Werley and Jana Withrow (now known as Jana Woolley) were among 11 players honored. Old Dominion also placed three players on the squad, while Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts and Wake Forest had one each.
"I'm very proud of Leslie, Cindy and Jana, and also of Carolina's strong representation on the team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "The NCAA Tournament is the most important part of the season and all three of these players stepped up and played extremely well in big games. The honor is a credit to their outstanding careers and also to our program's success in the postseason."
Lyness lettered for the Tar Heels from 1986-89 and was named All-NCAA Tournament in 1987 and in '89, when UNC won its first national championship. As a senior, she was the recipient of the 1989 Honda Award as national player of the year.
Werley lettered in 1993 and '94 then in '96 and '97 after taking 1995 off to prepare for the Summer Olympics. She played on NCAA title teams in 1996 and '97 and earned the Honda Award in both of those years. She was a three-time All-NCAA Tournament pick.
Withrow was the starting goalkeeper for UNC's national championship teams in 1995, '96 and '97. She earned All-NCAA Tournament honors in 1995 and was named All-America in 1996 and '97, her junior and senior seasons. She is now in her eighth year as a Carolina assistant coach.
Other members of the NCAA team are Marina DiGiacomo (Old Dominion), Kelly Doton (Wake Forest), Tracey Fuchs (Connecticut), Kristy Gleason (Iowa), Christy Morgan (Old Dominion), Robin Smith (Old Dominion), Judy Strong (Massachusetts) and Carla Tagliente (Maryland). ODU's Beth Anders, who has led the Lady Monarchs to nine titles, was honored as the anniversary squad's coach.
Several other Tar Heels were nominees for the anniversary squad. Kate Barber, Joy Driscoll, Barb Hansen and Nancy Pelligreen were among the players selected as candidates for the honor, and Shelton was among the coaches.
