Tar Heels Head Into ACC Tournament As No. 4 Seed

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team has earned the No. 4 seed in the 2005 ACC Field Hockey Championship, to be played Nov. 3, 4 and 6 in College Park, Md., on the campus of the University of Maryland. The Tar Heels (13-5, 2-3 ACC) will face No. 5 Boston College in the tournament's opening game on Thursday at 1 p.m.
All six ACC teams are ranked in the top 20 heading into the event.
Wake Forest, the defending NCAA Champion and the No. 1 team in the nation all season, is the tournament's top seed. The Demon Deacons are 18-0 overall and finished ACC play 5-0.
Maryland, ranked third in the nation, finished the season with a 17-2 overall mark and a 4-1 ACC record to earn the No. 2 seed. Second-ranked Duke wrapped up its season with a 14-3 record and finished 3-2 in ACC competition to earn the third seed.
Fourth-seeded UNC is the defending ACC Champion. The Tar Heels claimed the program's 15th title in 2004 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The 14th-ranked Eagles, in their first season in the ACC, are 13-5 overall and finished 1-4 in league play to earn the fifth seed. No. 20 Virginia (8-10, 0-5 ACC) is the sixth seed.
The UNC-BC matchup opens the action at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, followed by a game between Duke and Virginia at 7 p.m.
On Friday, the North Carolina-Boston College winner will take on Wake Forest at 4 p.m. The Duke-Virginia winner meets host Maryland at 7 p.m.
The championship match, which will be carried regionally on FSN South, FSN Florida and Comcast SportsNet, is set for Sunday at noon.
