Tar Heels Nominated For NCAA Anniversary Team

The NCAA is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Division I field hockey championship this fall, and fans are invited to help select the 25th Anniversary Team.
A team of 11 players and one coach will be announced on Oct. 14. Thirty-five players, all of whom have made at least one appearance on an NCAA All-Tournament team, have been nominated for the honor. Seven Tar Heels - Leslie Lyness, Barb Hansen, Cindy Werley, Kate Barber, Nancy Pelligreen, Jana Withrow and Joy Driscoll - are on the list.
UNC coach Karen Shelton is one of five nominees for the coaching honor. Of those nominated, three - Maryland's Missy Meharg, Wake Forest's Jennifer Averill and Shelton - coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Under Shelton's direction, the Tar Heels have participated in the NCAA tournament 21 times, have reached the national semifinals 12 times and have won four championships, in 1989, 1995, 1996 and 1997.
Lyness was a member of UNC's first title team and was named to the NCAA All-Touranment team in 1987 and '89. Hansen played in three championship games and was named to all-tournament teams in 1993 and '94. Werley played on title teams in 1996 and '97 and was named all-tournament three times, in 1994, '96 and '97.
Barber, Driscoll, Pelligreen and Withrow played on NCAA Championship teams in 1995, '96 and '97. Barber and Pelligreen were named to the all-tournament teams in all three of those years, while Withrow earned the honor in 1995 and Driscoll in 1996 and '97.
Throughout the 2005-06 school year, the NCAA is celebrating the 25th anniversary of women's championships. The organization began sponsoring women's championships in 1981.
