CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two North Carolina players - junior midfielder Rachel Dawson and senior goalkeeper Katy Tran - have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-South Region first team, announced Monday. UNC juniors Laree Beans and Brooke Miller and senior Naomi Weatherald were named to the second team.
Dawson and Tran, both first-team picks for the second year in a row, are now candidates for All-America honors, which will be announced next Monday. A first-team All-America selection last year as a sophomore, Dawson led UNC in goals this season with 11 and ranked second in assists with eight for a team-high 30 points, despite missing five games while at international competitions. She missed three games in September while playing at the Junior World Cup in Chile with the U.S. Under-21 Team and she was away for two games in November for the Three Nations Tournament in Argentina with the National Team.
Tran started all 21 games and finished the season with a goals against average of 1.22 and six solo shutouts. She also earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC Tournament honors, with Dawson joining her on the former squad and Miller on the latter.
Beans, a forward, started 18 games for the Tar Heels, missing three for the Junior World Cup. She scored two goals and had three assists for seven points. Miller, a back, finished the season with a goal and two assists. Weatherald, also a back and a team co-captain along with Tran, scored four goals and four assists in her final season in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels finished the year 14-7 and were ranked No. 5 in the final national poll of the season.
