The scholarship is worth $1,500, and Tran is the second Tar Heel in as many years to receive it. Laura Gerraughty, a member of the track and field team, was the recipient in 2004.
A fifth-year student at UNC who took a redshirt season in 2002, Tran has earned honors for her field hockey play, her academic performance and her community service involvement.
As a senior on the field hockey team this season, she earned All-South Region, All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC Tournament honors, all for the second year in a row. She has been team's starting goalkeeper for the past three seasons and served as co-captain this year as the Tar Heels finished 14-7. She helped the team to the 2004 ACC championship last year as a junior.
A double major in biology and exercise and sport science, Tran has earned spots on the Dean's List and ACC Academic Honor Roll each year at UNC. She also has been named to the National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Tran is active in programs such as the Carolina Leadership Academy, Get Kids in Action and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, and last year was the recipient of an ACC Top Six for Service Award and an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. She spent part of last summer studying and conducting research in Vietnam.
