CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina failed in its bid to return to the NCAA College Cup in 2005 as seventh-ranked Florida State won a penalty kick shootout 5-4 over the Tar Heels after the teams played to a 1-1 tie after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
The Seminoles advance to the NCAA College Cup next Friday at College Station, Texas where they will play either UCLA or Virginia. The Seminoles are now 20-3-1 on the season while the tie ends the UNC season at 23-1-1. This season marks only the second time in the 25-year history of the NCAA Tournament where North Carolina has failed to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
The game was thoroughly dominated statistically by the Tar Heels who outshot the Seminoles 31-7 and had 10 corner kicks to one for FSU. But those statistics meant nothing in the end as the game remained tied at the end of 110 minutes of action, forcing penalty kicks where the Seminoles made all five of their tries while the Tar Heels were successful on only four.
FSU took an early lead in the match and held that lead until the second half. India Trotter of the Seminoles scored her 13th goal of the season on a breakaway at 8:25 of the match after the Tar Heels inadvertently headed a ball in the midfield towards their own end. Trotter ran onto the ball and split two defenders to get a one-on-one chance with UNC goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough. Trotter finished into the lower left corner of the goal.
Carolina outshot the Seminoles 7-1 in the first half and 18-2 in the second half but could only get one shot past FSU goalkeeper Aly Mims. Eventually the Tar Heels scored at 56:26 on a header by senior defender Kendall Fletcher. After a corner kick, the ball got ping ponged around in the penalty area before being saved by Heather O'Reilly. O'Reilly sent a ball back to Lindsay Tarpley who flicked it on to Fletcher far post for the tying goal. Florida State's goalkeeping was specatcular as Ali Mims made 13 saves in the goal and another five of UNC's shots on the goal were saved off the line by FSU field players. Rodenbough had two saves including a save on a breakaway by India Trotter in the first overtime. Tarpley had a shot on a breakaway saved by Mims in the first overtime as well and UNC's Elizabeth Guess had a shot go off the crossbar in the second overtime.
North Carolina will lose 10 seniors off their roster who played in their final game on Friday. The list includes four of the starters in Saturday's match -- forward Lindsay Tarpley, midfielders Lori Chalupny and Kacey White and defender Kendall Fletcher. The other seniors include Aly Winget, who started most of the year in goal for the Tar Heels and ended as the ACC career leader in solo shutouts. Reserves who will graduate are Leea Murphy, Corinne Black, Brynn Hardman and Karli Eller, all reserves on the front line, as well as midfielder/defender Vanessa Toll, a senior transfer from NCAA Division II who played her final season at North Carolina.
