Tar Heels To Open NCAA Play Against Indiana

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina has received an at-large bid to the 2005 Division I Field Hockey Championships and will open play Saturday with a first-round game against Indiana in Winston-Salem, N.C. Host Wake Forest will face California in the other first-round game at that site with the winners playing Sunday for a spot in the national semifinals.
The UNC-Indiana game, which will be the first field hockey matchup between the two schools, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Kentner Stadium and the Wake-Cal matchup will follow at 2 p.m. Sunday's second-round game will be at 2 p.m.
"We're excited to be playing in the tournament and we're looking forward to our game with Indiana on Saturday," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who is in her 25th year at Carolina and is leading the Tar Heels into the NCAA postseason for the 22nd time. "The tournament is a new season and we're just happy to have the chance to get out on the field again."
North Carolina fell to Wake Forest last Friday in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinals and is 14-6 on the season, No. 5 in the national poll. Indiana, out of the Big Ten, is 15-4 and is ranked ninth.
The Tar Heels are one of five Atlantic Coast Conference teams to make the 16-team field. Maryland is hosting games in College Park and will open against Richmond, while Duke and Boston College both will play in Princeton, N.J., Duke against the host Tigers and Boston College against Connecticut.
UNC has won four previous NCAA championships - in 1989, 1995, 1996 and 1997 - and has reached the final four on eight other occasions, most recently in 2000.
