CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's talented pitchers dominated the Cape Cod League, and six Tar Heels earned all-star honors in four different leagues, as the Carolina baseball program experienced yet another successful summer in various wooden bat collegiate leagues across the country.
The Tar Heels' starting rotation of Daniel Bard, Andrew Miller and Robert Woodard were each named to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game with Bard bringing home MVP honors for the West Division. Miller shared the league's pitching award and was voted the Cape's top pro prospect by scouts.
Other Tar Heel summer all-stars include third baseman Reid Fronk, who played in the Northwoods League, Seth Williams, who starred in the Coastal Plain League, and Chris Kahler, who played in the Southeastern Collegiate Baseball League.
Woodard, Williams and Matt Spencer, who also played in the Coastal Plain League, all picked up player of the week honors in their respective leagues.
Below is a look at all 19 of the Tar Heels in action this summer:
CAPE COD LEAGUE
Daniel Bard, Wareham - Went 3-3 with a 1.25 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 65 innings Led the league in strikeouts and was third in ERA Started the All-Star Game for the West Division and earned MVP honors.
Andrew Carignan, Bourne - Went 1-2 with a 1.44 ERA and two saves Struck out 32 in 25 innings.
Matt Danford, Chatham - Recorded a 3.18 ERA over 22.2 innings Made 15 appearances and posted an 0-1 record.
Chad Flack, Harwich - Hit .213 with three home runs and 16 RBI Participated in the league's home run contest prior to the All-Star Game.
Jonathan Hovis, Brewster - Made a team-high 16 appearances and was 0-3 with eight saves Posted a 1.52 ERA and struck out in 29.2 innings Also had three at-bats.
Andrew Miller, Chatham - Selected by scouts as the winner of the Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award and shared the league's B.F.C. Whitehouse Outstanding Pitching Award Named to the league's All-Star Game for the second straight season Was 6-0 with a 1.65 ERA Fanned 66 batters in just 49 innings Made eight starts.
Robert Woodard, Chatham - Went 5-1 on the summer with a 2.53 ERA Worked 46.1 innings and struck out 26 batters against just four walks Selected to play in the league's All-Star Game Named Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week for week three after seven shutout innings against Brewster June 27.
COASTAL PLAIN LEAGUE
Jay Cox, Fayetteville - Hit .218 in 26 games Drove in 12 runs and stole six bases Started 25 games.
Andy Gale, Wilmington - Made eight appearances Posted a 3.09 ERA and struck out 10 in 11.2 innings.
Josh Horton, Wilmington - Hit .258 in 26 games, all starts Drove in seven runs and stole seven bases.
Matt Iannetta, New Bern - Played in 28 games and made 26 starts Hit .162 and drove in 10 runs.
Benji Johnson, Gastonia - Played in 24 games and made 21 starts Hit .203 and drove in eight runs.
Kyle Shelton, Outer Banks - Started 49 games and hit .197 Drove in seven runs and stole 10 bases in 12 attempts.
Matt Spencer, Asheboro - Hit .297 in 45 games Led the team with five homers and 33 RBI Slugged .507 and swiped 12 bases in 12 attempts Also pitched in two games Named CPL Rawlings Hitter of the Week for week eight after batting .412 over a four-game stretch.
Tyler Trice, Outer Banks - Pitched in 20 games and recorded a 2-3 record Posted a 2.37 ERA and fanned 26 in 30.1 innings Made one start.
Seth Williams, Asheboro - Hit a team-best .299, hit four home runs and added nine doubles Drove in 19 runs and stole 14 bases Also pitched in eight games Named to the league's All-Star Game Named CPL Rawlings Hitter of the Week for week four after hitting .571 in four games.
NORTHWOODS LEAGUE
Reid Fronk, Mankato - Started at third base in the league's All-Star Game Hit .333 with seven home runs and 34 RBI Had a team-best 12 doubles and two triples Also stole nine bases and slugged .512.
SOUTHERN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Mike Facchinei, Rock Hill - Went 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA in seven appearances Fanned 31 over 29 innings.
Chris Kahler, Rock Hill - Hit .319 with two homers and 12 runs batted in Named South Division MVP in the league's All-Star game after going 2-for-3 with one RBI and four runs scored.
