PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The North Carolina field hockey team put together its largest scoring output of the season and its fifth shutout in six games with a 7-0 win over Monmouth Sunday afternoon in Temple Invitational play at Geasey Field. Seven different players scored goals for the Tar Heels (6-0).
"It was nice to score some goals and get contributions from a lot of different people," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, whose team came into the contest averaging 1.6 goals per game. "We improved as the game went on and we saw some areas we want to improve in as we prepare to play Old Dominion on Saturday."
Liz Morris, a sophomore forward from Chapel Hill, opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game with her first goal of the season, assisted by junior Laree Beans. At the 18:50 mark, junior Rachel Dawson, who had the game-winner in Saturday's 1-0 victory against Temple, scored on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Ashley Judge and sophomore Heather Kendell. Ten minutes later, sophomore Alli Tanner tipped in a shot by Dawson to put the score at 3-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, Kendell opened the scoring with a field goal, assisted by freshman Kate Scholl. At the 59:08 mark, Britt van Beek scored the first goal of her career, assisted by sophomore Jesse Gey, to put UNC up 5-0. With just over eight minutes remaining, junior Brooke Miller scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Kendell and sophomore Xan Funk. Gey, who finished the game with three points, the first of her career, put the final score at 7-0 with an unassisted goal at the 65:15 mark.
Eleven different Tar Heels registered points, including five - Beans, Gey, Miller, Scholl and Tanner - who were playing in their home state. Another Pennsylvania native, senior Katy Tran, started in goal and shared the shutout with backup keeper Marie Bounds, who saw her first action of the season. The Tar Heel defense has allowed just one goal all year.
Carolina's next game, a 1 p.m. matchup with Old Dominion on Saturday at Henry Stadium, will be the first in a three-game streak during which the Tar Heels will be without two of their starters. Juniors Rachel Dawson and Laree Beans are members of the U.S. Junior World Cup team and parted with the Tar Heels in Philadelphia to travel to Atlanta and meet their U.S. teammates for the trip to Santiago, Chile, where the competition runs Sept. 14-25. Dawson, a midfielder, and Beans, a forward, will miss UNC's games against Old Dominion (Sept. 17), Duke (Sept. 22 ) and Radford (Sept. 25).
"We'll treat their absence like an injury situation," Shelton said. "Other playres will have to step up and fill those holes. We'll make some adjustments in practice this week and hopefully we'll continue to play hard and play well. The competition will be a great experience for Rachel and Laree and we'll look forward to welcoming them back."
Along with UNC, Atlantic Coast Conference teams Duke, Maryland, Virginia and Wake Forest all will lose players during the international competition. The U.S. squad, competing in Pool A, begins play on Wednesday with a matchup against England.
