SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The University of North Carolina volleyball team suffered its first lost of the season Friday in four games, falling 30-19, 26-30, 30-21, 30-21 to Fresno State. Senior outside hitter Camilla Ihenetu led the way for UNC, tallying 11 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Fresno State (1-1) came out hot in game one, outhitting the Tar Heels (1-1) .317 to .161 en route to a 30-19 win. After falling behind 3-1 in the early going, the Bulldogs used a 21-5 run to quickly put the game away.
Carolina bounced back in the second stanza to win a tightly contested game, 30-26. The game featured 12 ties and six lead changes, the last of which came on a kill by freshman outside hitter Lauren Prussing to give the Tar Heels a 25-24 lead they would not relinquish.
The Bulldogs would not back down, however, and cruised to relatively easy 30-21 wins in the final two games. Kasie Spencer led Fresno State with 21 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while setter Robyn Keune registered a double-double with 57 assists and 15 digs. The Bulldog defense was stellar throughout, outdigging the Tar Heels 88-61 for the match.
UNC will return to action with two more matches Saturday. The Tar Heels face William and Mary at 12:15 PDT and host San Francisco at 7 p.m.
