CHAPEL?HILL, N.C. - Three different players scored for Wake Forest Friday night as the second-ranked Demon Deacons beat North Carolina 3-0 to eliminate the eighth-ranked Tar Heels from Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Tournament play at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Wake, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, improved to 18-1 with the semifinals win while the host Tar Heels, the sixth seed in the tournament, fell to 13-8.
With the win, Wake Forest advanced to Sunday's ACC title game, which is set for noon. The Demon Deacons will face top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland, a 5-2 winner over Virginia in Friday's first semifinal game.
"Congratulations to Wake Forest," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We were incredibly outclassed today, from the beginning of the game all the way through. There were some bright spots - we didn't give up a cheap goal, the three goals they scored were beautiful goal, and I thought the kids fought hard. What we need to do now is kind of put this game behind us. We got beat by a better team tonight."
Wake Forest scored the only goal it would need 12 minutes into the game, when senior Lauren Crandall notched her ninth goal of the season on a penalty corner, assisted by sophomore Minou Gimbrere. The Demon Deacons went up 2-0 less than seven minutes later when senior Haley Scott scored on an assist by senior Jamie Whitten.
Wake added a third goal in the second half. On a penalty corner, sophomore Michelle Kasold scored her team-high 17th goal of the season, assisted by Crandall.
For the game, WFU outshot UNC 17-3. Wake had five corners to Carolina's three, all of which came in the second half.
North Carolina now awaits Tuesday's announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket. The 16-team field will be revealed beginning at 7:30 p.m. on CSTV. Tournament play begins next Saturday, Nov. 11, at campus sites to be announced. Should the Tar Heels receive an at-large bid, they will play without senior captain Brooke Miller, who was given a red card with 19 minutes to play against Wake Forest and must sit out UNC's next contest.
