Carolina Falls To Duke In Four

DURHAM, N.C. --- Lauren Prussing matched a career high with 17 kills, but North Carolina fell to Duke, 30-21, 30-23, 28-30, 30-12, Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the win, Duke gains 0.5 points in the Carlyle Cup to give the Blue Devils a 4.5-1.5 overall lead. Rachael Moss led the Blue Devils with 23 kills and 20 digs.
Duke (21-3, 14-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) held a fairly comfortable advantage throughout the first two games, winning 30-21 and 30-23. The Blue Devils outhit the Tar Heels .284 to .134 through two stanzas, with Moss leading the way with 11 kills against just two errors. Duke's block also had the upper hand, outblocking UNC 6-1.
Carolina (6-18, 4-11 ACC) finally built some momentum in game three. Trailing 13-10 early in the frame, the Tar Heels won 10 of the next 12 points to build a 20-15 lead. Prussing was instrumental during the run, recording three of her game-high eight kills during the spurt.
UNC would stretch its lead to as much as seven at 28-21 and got its first game point of the night at 29-23. But Duke would not go down easily, as the hosts fought off five straight game points before Megan Owens finally ended it with a kill. The Tar Heel offense was stellar throughout the game, registering 24 kills against just three errors for a sparkling .447 hitting percentage.
After being unable to contain Carolina in game three, Duke proved to be too much in game four, rolling to a 30-12 win to secure the match. The Blue Devils hit .388 for the frame and collected 22 kills to just eight for UNC.
Brianna Eskola anchored the Carolina back row with 32 digs, her third straight outing with at least 20 saves. Owens and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland each chipped in 12 kills. Stephanie Jansma had her fifth double-double in seven matches with 55 assists and 14 digs.
Carolina has the rest of the weekend off before traveling to Raleigh Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match against NC State.
