Shelton Announces Addition To Tar Heel Staff

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Baden Sharp has joined the North Carolina field hockey staff as an assistant coach, UNC head coach Karen Shelton announced Friday. "I'm delighted to have added Baden to our staff," Shelton said. "He brings energy and enthusiasm to our program, along with offensive expertise and experience. In addition to focusing on the offense, he will be working extensively with our goalkeepers."
Sharp, a native of Australia, has extensive international field hockey experience as a player and a coach. His playing career included eight years with the Northern Territory senior men's team and also stints in England and Germany. He was a member of the Australian Under 21 squad in 1992 and the Australian Universities Team in 1993 and 1995.
He has coached men's and women's club teams in Germany and also has worked with the U.S. Men's National Team. Among other positions, he has worked as a teacher and as a tour guide at Kakadu National Park in his home city of Darwin. A 1996 graduate of Northern Territory University in Darwin with a B.A. in business management, he holds Level I national coaching accreditation and a State A badge in umpiring.
The Tar Heels will kick off the 2006 season by hosting the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Aug. 26-27. UNC opens against Michigan on the 26th and faces Iowa on the 27th.
