CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina field hockey freshman Danielle Forword has been honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference and by UNC for her performances in last weekend's games. She scored her first career goal against Michigan on Saturday and added the game-winner against Iowa on Sunday to lead the Tar Heels to a 2-0 record in the ACC-Big Ten Challege. For her play, she has been named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week and Tar Heel Student-Athlete of the Week.
Forword, from East London, South Africa, scored her first goal as a Tar Heel in the second half of the 3-1 win over the Wolverines. On Sunday, she assisted on UNC's first goal against the Hawkeyes, then scored the deciding goal with 45 seconds to play as UNC won 2-1.
Other Nominees for Tar Heel Student-Athlete of the Week:
YAEL AVERBUCH
Women's Soccer, Midfielder
Sophomore, Montclair, N.J.
Averbuch had the first multi-goal game of her career as she scored twice in a span of two and a half minutes midway through the first half of No. 4 North Carolina's 3-0 win at SMU Sunday afternoon. The two goals helped Carolina (1-1) bounce back from its first season-opening loss in 23 years, a 1-0 double overtime setback at Texas A&M Friday.
JUSTIN HUGHES
Men's Soccer, Goalkeeper
Senior, Wake Forest, N.C.
Hughes led No. 1 North Carolina to a perfect weekend at the Wake Forest adidas Classic with two shutouts in goal. The Wake Forest, N.C., product made three saves in a 2-0 win over William & Mary Friday and followed with two key second half stops - including an impressive diving save in the 62nd minute - in a 1-0 victory over UCF Sunday. He also played an important role in organizing a defense that allowed just 13 shots on the weekend. Hughes, who was named to the all-tournament team, now has 15 career shutouts and has been a key part of a UNC defense that has posted 10 shutouts in its last 12 games dating to last season.
