CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Rachel Dawson is among 16 players who have been named to the 2006 U.S. Field Hockey World Cup team, announced this week by USA Field Hockey. She joins three Tar Heel alums - Kate Barber, Carrie Lingo and Amy Tran - on the roster.
Dawson, who has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, will take the season away from the UNC squad while competing for the U.S. and return in 2007 for her senior year. She is one of two collegiate players named to the roster, along with Wake Forest's Lauren Crandall.
"We're very proud of Rachel Dawson," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "She has been improving steadily and I think she's thriving in the international environment. We're delighted to have her join the other Tar Heels on the U.S. team.
"We'll miss her this season, but we always want to recruit the kind of player who has the desire to compete internationally at the highest level, and we support them as they go after those dreams. We'll look forward to welcoming her back for next season."
There have been at least two UNC players on every World Cup roster since 1990. As a player, Shelton represented the U.S. at the 1983 World Cup. arber, who lettered for UNC from 1994-97, will be making her third World Cup appearance. She serves as the team captain and has 163 international caps. Lingo, who lettered in 1999-2001, will make her second World Cup appearance. Tran, who lettered 1999-2002, will make her first World Cup appearance. She has been named Goalkeeper of the Tournament in three consecutive competitions, including the recent Astroturf March on Madrid. She also earned the honor at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Rome last May, where the U.S. finished fourth to earn a spot in the field.
Two other players will be added to the roster on Sept. 10. Among those still in the running for those spots is former UNC standout Kelsey Keeran, the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament MVP.
The World Cup is scheduled for Sept. 27-Oct. 8 in Madrid, Spain. The U.S. will compete in Pool B, opening against Argentina on Sept. 27 and playing Australia the following day.
