Brooke Miller Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Brooke Miller scored four goals and had two assists to lead the field hockey team to an undefeated 3-0 week and earn Progress Energy Performer of the Week honors for September 3-10, 2006. Miller, a senior midfielder/back from Hummelstown, Pa., scored the first goal in all three wins, 2-0 over Davidson on Tuesday, 6-0 at West Chester on Saturday and 7-1 vs. Villanova on Sunday. She finished the West Chester game with two goals and the Villanova game with a goal and two assists. The co-captain from Hummelstown, Pa., is the Tar Heels scoring leader, with five goals and three assists for 13 points on the season.

Freshman Casey Nogueira scored the first goal of her UNC soccer career in the 41st minute to lead No. 5 North Carolina to a 1-0 victory over defending NCAA champion Portland on the road Sunday. The goal helped the Tar Heels go 2-0 on the weekend and improve to 6-1 overall. Nogueira's goal came in only her second game as a Tar Heel as she rejoined the team last week after playing for the U.S. Under 20 National Team in the World Championship in Russia.

Martin Ureta began the fall campaign with a tie for third place at the International Collegiate played at St. Andrews in Scotland. Ureta's six-under-par 210 total helped lead the Tar Heels to claim the team title with a nine-under 855 total, two strokes ahead of runner-up Wake Forest.
Ureta's final round was his low round of the 54-hole event as he carded a three-under 69. He tallied a two-under 70 in the first round followed by a one-under 71 in the second round. The Tar Heels got off to a roaring start by firing a nine-under team total in the first round. They followed that with a one-over 289 in the second round and a one-under 287 total in the final round.
Carolina's next tournament is Oct. 8-9 at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic in Durham.
