Mann Scores Twice In UNC's Win at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior Karen Mann scored twice Saturday as the North Carolina field hockey team beat host James Madison 4-1. Senior Brooke Miller and freshman Danielle Forword provided the other two goals as the fifth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 3-0 on the year. No. 18 James Madison, which scored its only goal with five minutes to play, fell to 2-1.
UNC got on the board 15 minutes into the game with Miller's first goal of the season. She scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Britt van Beek and Jesse Gey.
Six minutes later, Mann, a forward from North Vancouver, British Columbia, increased the lead to 2-0 when she gathered the rebound on a save and shot it past Merel Broekhuizen, the Dukes' starter in goal.
With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Mann registered her second goal of the game and fourth of the season on a penalty corner, assisted by Miller, to put the Tar Heels up 3-0. Eight minutes later, Forword scored her third goal of the season to put UNC up 4-0.
JMU's goal came 39 seconds after the Tar Heels' final score. With 5:01 on the clock, Ashley Walls got a shot past UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell, assisted by Melissa Stefaniak.
UNC returns to action on Tuesday with a home game against Davidson. Game time at Francis E. Henry Stadium is 7 p.m.
