CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 2 Wake Forest scored with no time on the clock at the end of regulation then had the gamewinner 12:53 into overtime to defeat No. 6 North Carolina 4-3 in an Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey matchup Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Demon Deacons improved to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in ACC play with the win, while the Tar Heels fell to 8-4 overall, 0-3 in the ACC. The loss was UNC's second overtime defeat in this year's three conference games.
"That was as heartbreaking as it gets," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "But I felt good though about our team and our progress. The one thing that we wanted to do going into the game is fight and play hard together and we did that."
Wake Forest opened the scoring 5:19 into the game with a goal by sophomore Michelle Kasold. UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell got a pad on the shot, but the ball bounced off of her and into the goal. Carolina tied the game at the 23:32 mark on a penalty corner, when freshman Illse Davids sent a shot to the left of the goal and junior Jesse Gey redirected it past Wake goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi.
UNC went up 2-1 less than a minute before halftime when junior Alli Tanner sent a pass in from the left side of the cage and freshman Danielle Forword shot it in for her eighth goal of the season. The Tar Heels took a 3-1 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game when junior Heather Kendell took a pass from senior Karen Mann and shot from in front of the goal for her second score of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Wake pulled back within one on a goal by junior Chelsea Cipriani, who knocked in a pass from senior Tracey Scott. Carolina led 3-2 as the game clock ticked down, but the Demon Deacons drew a penalty corner with 18 seconds to play. With no time remaining on the clock, senior Jamie Whitten sent the push-in to Cipriani, who scored from the left side of the circle to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Wake drew two penalty corners in the overtime, but was unable to capitalize on either. With 2:07 remaining in the period, O'Donnell tried to clear a ball and Kasold grabbed it and pushed it past her and into the goal for the win.
"Unfortunately, at the end of the game we had the right thoughts, we didn't have the correct execution and that cost us," Shelton said. "Give credit to Wake Forest - they had no quit in them. I just feel good that our team continues to improve. I told the team, I don't want any moral victories, but I do want us to recognize when we make improvements, and we took our game to the next level today, even though we didn't win."
After UNC outshot Wake Forest 9-4 in the first half, the Demon Deacons dominated the second-half stats, outshooting Carolina 11-2. They led 6-1 in shots in the overtime period and 21-12 for the game. UNC had four first-half penalty corners to two by Wake, but WFU drew nine in the second half and two in the overtime while the Tar Heels didn't manage one past halftime.
UNC returns to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against No. 18 William & Mary at Henry Stadium.
