CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team earned its first shutout victory of the season Tuesday night, 2-0 over visiting Davidson. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Wildcats fell to 1-2 on the season.
Team captain Brooke Miller registered the only goal UNC would need with 19:37 remaining in the first half. The senior from Hummelstown, Pa., blasted a penalty corner shot past Davidson goalkeeper Brittany Rollek to put UNC up 1-0. Juniors Jesse Gey and Xan Funk assisted on the play.
UNC increased its lead eight minutes later when freshman Danielle Forword dribbled in and scored an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season.
The Tar Heels had 28 shots on the night - 14 in each half - but were unable to tack on an additional goal in the second half. UNC finished with 15 penalty corners to Davidson's three, all of which came in the first half. The Wildcats finished with seven shots, five of them in the first half.
"I congratulate Davidson on playing with a lot of heart and enthusiasm tonight," UNC coach Karen Shelton said.
Rollek made 10 saves for the Wildcats. UNC freshman Brianna O'Donnell had three, all in the first half, en route to her first collegiate shutout.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a pair of games at West Chester (Pa.) this weekend. UNC plays the host Golden Rams on Saturday and Villanova on Sunday.
"We know that in other games we won't have as many opportunities as we did tonight, so to have the large number we did and not convert is a concern," Shelton said. "We know what we have to work on and we look forward to getting back out on the practice field."
