GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Katelyn Falgowski, a freshman from Landenberg, Pa., has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for field hockey. The honor is the first of her career and she is the third Tar Heel to be honored this season, joining seniors Rachel Dawson and Jesse Gey.
A midfielder who has started every game this year, Falgowski scored a goal and added an assist on Saturday as No. 1 UNC beat previously-undefeated No. 2 Maryland, 3-0. She assisted on senior Alli Tanner's gamewinner in the 56th minute of play then scored a goal to put Carolina up 2-0 in the 68th minute. Defensively, she was part of a unit that held the Terrapins without a penalty corner or a shot in the game.
Falgowski has an NCAA-best 18 assists this season, a total that ranks 10th on UNC's single-season assists chart. She also has scored five goals for a total of 28 points, third on the team.
The Tar Heels are now 17-0 with one regular-season game remaining, this Saturday at No. 10 Old Dominion. Carolina finished ACC play 5-0 to claim the top seed at the upcoming conference tournament, Nov. 1-4 at Boston College.
