Liz Morris, a senior field hockey forward from Chapel Hill, N.C., took time out recently to share some thoughts with TarHeelBlue.com.
Q and A by Athletic Communications Student Assistant Kathryn Roth
What made you decide that you wanted to play for UNC field hockey?
eing from Chapel Hill, I've followed UNC ever since I started
playing field hockey. It was my dream ever since 6th grade and I
jumped at the opportunity to play here. It was also an added bonus
that longtime teammate Heather Kendell and Leslie Funk were coming as
well.
What did you do over the summer to prepare for this season?
I
attempted to stay in touch with my teammates, worked out a lot and got
lots of rest. Also, I like to visualize and strategize to help
mentally prepare myself for my final year.
What are your plans after graduation?
Not sure - I'm studying abroad
next semester so I typically re-direct the attention towards that
experience.
What have you personally done to keep the momentum of this team
going?
I think all of the seniors come to practice every day to
compete.
Undefeated in the regular season, what is the team doing to
prepare for the tournament?
The same thing we have done all season
long.
Could you reflect on the last four seasons and what you think were
the best moments and the worst?
Maybe one of the worst moments was a
practice during a hurricane when classes were canceled but we had to
come anyways. Everyone had their Gortex on and the rain was coming in
sideways because the wind was blowing so hard. Or another was a 6 a.m.
practice on the intramural fields to prepare for a game against
Appalachian State. Our assistant coach Shelley Johnson turned her car
lights towards the field because there wasn't lighting for the field.
ut we basically played keep-away in the dark. The best moments are
when we are on the bus and talk about the past seasons and we laugh
about memories and old teammates.
If you had not devoted your time to playing field hockey while in
college, what would you be doing instead?
Fulfilling my dreams through
another avenue - maybe club field hockey or some sort of campus
organization. I would have defiantly studied abroad for a year.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Tough
question. I think anywhere in South America, Spain or India.
asically anywhere I haven't been before would be nice.
What is the best vacation you have ever been on?
To South Africa
with my ex-roommate Sophie to visit teammate Dani Forword. We
experienced traditional tourist spots as well as escapades that only a
local could know about.
