Eight Tar Heels Earn All-Region Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Eight North Carolina field hockey players have earned All-South Region recognition, as announced Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Seniors Laree Beans, Rachel Dawson and Jesse Gey and freshman Katelyn Falgowski were named to the 16-member first team. Sophomores Illse Davids, Danielle Forword, Riley Foster and Brianna O'Donnell were named to the second team.
All eight are part of the starting lineup for top-ranked UNC, which will face No. 4 Connecticut Friday in an NCAA Championships semifinal match in College Park, Md. The winner advances to the NCAA title game on Sunday at noon.
eans, a team captain from Bethlehem, Pa., has played in all 22 games this fall. A forward, she has 10 goals and four assists for 24 points, fourth on the team.
Dawson, also a team captain, earned all-region honors for the fourth time in her career. A back/midfielder from Berlin, N.J., she was voted Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year and tournament MVP and leads UNC in goals with 18.
Falgowski, a midfielder from Landenberg, Pa., leads the nation in assists this season with 20. She was voted the ACC Freshman of the Year.
Gey, a midfielder from Green Lane, Pa., leads UNC with 42 points this season on 12 goals and 18 assists. She also joined Dawson and Falgowski on the All-ACC team.
Davids, a midfielder from Plumstead, South Africa; Foster, a back from Fort Worth, Texas; and O'Donnell, a goalkeeper from Collegeville, Pa., were named to the All-South Region second-team for the second year in a row. Forword, a forward from East London, South Africa, made her first appearance on the squad.
The four Tar Heels named to the first team, along with first-team honorees from the other four regions, are now in the running for All-America recognition. The NFHCA All-America first, second and third teams will be announced on Monday.
