CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team headed for Maryland Wednesday afternoon in preparation for this weekend's NCAA final four, to be hosted by the University of Maryland at its Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Following a practice at Henry Stadium, the final one for the program's seven seniors, the Tar Heels were sent off by an enthusiastic group of supporters who turned out to wish them well. After cheers and hugs, the team boarded its bus for the ride to College Park.
Thursday's schedule includes practice, a press conference and the NCAA final four banquet. Friday it's time for the teams to get down to business, as UNC and No. 4 Connecticut (22-2) meet at 5 p.m. in the first NCAA semifinal game. No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 9 Penn State will play at 7:30. Friday's winners will meet Sunday at noon for the NCAA title.
The championship game will air live on CSTV. In addition, all three of the weekend's games will be available for viewing on the web at NCAAsports.com. Fans also can follow the action on Gametracker at TarHeelBlue.com.
With a record of 22-0, UNC is enjoying one of its best seasons in school history and is playing for the program's fifth national title. The Tar Heels are making the program's 13th appearance in the final four, but it's the first trip for everyone on this year's squad as Carolina's last trip was in 2000.
