No. 5 Tar Heels Continue Homestand With Furman

CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina (6-0) returns to action after a six-day layoff when the Tar Heels welcome Furman to Carmichael Auditorium Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Carolina is coming off a 99-64 win over Georgia State on Monday, UNC's sixth straight home victory to open the season. Furman enters Sunday's meeting 2-2 after falling to UNC Asheville, 79-67, on Tuesday. UNC is ranked No. 5 in the AP poll and No. 6 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. Furman is unranked.
FURMAN SERIES NOTES
North Carolina is 3-0 all-time against Furman.
All three meetings have occured in Chapel Hill, with an 85-79 UNC win on Dec. 6, 1989 standing as the only close game.
The two teams have not met in almost ten years. T
he Lady Paladins last traveled to Chapel Hill on Dec. 7, 1997, when the Tar Heels triumphed 91-65.
UNC AGAINST THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
Despite being more than 20 years removed from the Southern Conference when the women's basketball program became a varsity team, Carolina has seen SoCon opponents often over the years. In 2007-08, the Tar Heels will face Elon, Furman, College of Charleston and Wofford. Now in its 34th year of varsity competition, UNC is 62-7 all-time against current members of the Southern Conference, with at least one win over each of the 10 current member schools.
NOTING THE LADY PALADINS
Furman is 2-2 on the season after falling to UNC Asheville, 79-67, on Tuesday.
The Lady Paladins are led in scoring by sophomore guard Kali Holtfreter, who averages 12.5 points per game.
Junior Katie Johnson leads a strong rebounding squad with 7.0 boards per contest. Furman has outrebounded opponents by a +6.5 margin through four games.
Furman is coached by sixth-year head man Sam Dixon, a former assistant under Jim Davis at Clemson.
