CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey program will welcome nine freshmen to the team when preseason workouts begin in August, UNC coach Karen Shelton announced on Thursday.
"I'm excited about the breadth of talent in this class and what it will mean not only for next year's team but for the future of the program," Shelton said. "This class represents the depth that we're working to establish. We're bringing in players who will help us all over the field, with some of them ready to step into the lineup this fall and some of them expected to help us down the road. I'm thrilled to welcome all of them to the Carolina family and I can't wait to get on the field in August."
The incoming class is made up of: Teryn Brill, a midfielder from Oley, Pa.; Meghan Dawson, a back from Berlin, N.J.; Michelle Drummonds, a back from Elkton, Md.; Katelyn Falgowski, a midfielder from Landenberg, Pa.; Louise McNutt, a midfielder from Austin, Texas; Colleen Murphy, a back from Chapel Hill; Kiki Norbruis, a midfielder from Zwolle, The Netherlands; Elizabeth Stephens, a forward from St. Louis, Mo.; and Lisa Visentin, a midfielder from Darwin, Australia.
Several have family ties to the UNC program. Dawson's older sister Rachel is a senior on the UNC squad and Brill's older sister Melanie is a sophomore. Falgowski's older sister Kerry played for the Tar Heels from 2001-04.
"It's a great statement that their older sisters have enjoyed being a part of the Carolina program," Shelton said. "We've had a number of sisters play for us and I think it just adds to the family atmosphere of our team."
Katelyn Falgowski is a member of the U.S. National Team and she and Rachel Dawson were teammates on the 2006 U.S. World Cup squad. Dawson was the only collegiate player to compete for the team and Falgowski was the only high school player. Additionally, Falgowski teamed with UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell on the U.S. Under-21 team's trip to China in March.
UNC opens the 2007 season on August 25 with a game at Michigan as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
