West Lafayette, Ind. - The North Carolina volleyball team lost its second consecutive five game match Saturday evening in West Lafayette, Ind. falling to eventual tournament champion Dayton. Christine Vaughen picked up all-tournament honors on the weekend for the Tar Heels who will return home for the Carolina Volleyball Classic on September 7 & 8 against American, Villanova and Western Kentucky.
Carolina opened its second match of the day very similar to how it opened the first dropping the first game by a slim 30-27 margin before claiming game two, 30-19.
The Tar Heels took a 15-13 lead midway through game one but could not lengthen their lead past two as Dayton evened the tally at 18-18 before taking a lead and never looking back for the three point victory.
Game two was a different story as the Tar Heels were the first to 10 points taking a 10-4 lead in game number two. Carolina would equal the six point lead later in the game on a Heather Brooks kill (16-10) and another kill from Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland (20-14). Back-to-back kills by Brooks and Lauren Prussing closed out the game for UNC.
Carolina took a 2-1 lead after claiming a 30-23 game three win despite falling behind early. The Tar Heels trailed 10-5 early in game three before battling back and evening the score at 14-14. UNC would outscore the Flyers 16-9 the rest of the way to put itself in position for the win.
Dayton could not be put away though as the Flyers tied the match at 2-2 to force the second five game match of the day for the Tar Heels. The game was tied seven times but almost every tie was near the beginning with the last one coming at 12-12 when Heather Brooks picked up one of her 12 kills in the match. Dayton would distance itself from Carolina at that point in the game to take the 30-25 win.
For the second consecutive match the Tar Heels found themselves in an early hole in the fifth game as Dayton scored the first three points of the game. Dayton was the first one to 10 as it held a 10-4 advantage. The Flyers would outscore the Tar Heels 5-2 to send UNC to defeat.
Heather Brooks paced the Tar Heels with 12 kills and nine blocks in the match, while hitting a team-high .296. Lauren Prussing chipped in 15 kills from her outside hitter position and added three blocks of her own. Brianna Eskola fell one dig shy of 30 for the second straight match at the Mortar Board Premier.
The Tar Heels will be in action on Friday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m. against Villanova in the Carolina Volleyball Classic that kicks off with three matches on Friday. Villanova will take on Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. and will be followed by Western Kentucky vs. American at 5 p.m. in the Carmichael Auditorium before the Tar Heels take the floor in their home opener.
