Carolina Women's Soccer Team Loses Again 1-0

RICHMOND, VA. - North Carolina's No. 2-ranked women's soccer team lost its second game of the young season, falling to William & Mary 1-0 Sunday afternoon in the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational at Richmond, Va. The Tribe took only one shot in the game but it found the back of the net in the 85th minute and it was enough to decide the game.
UNC outshot the Tribe 17-1 and had 10 corner kicks to one for William & Mary. This marks the first time since 2002 that the Tar Heels have lost as many as two matches in a season and the first time in history Carolina has had two losses as early as the sixth game of the season.
The lone goal of the game came from William & Mary's Claire Zimmeck off an assist by Emily Kittleson at 84:31 of the match. Kittleson send a feed from the right side of the pitch to the five-yard line out front where Zimmeck headed it home past UNC goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough.
With the loss the Tar Heels fall to 4-2 on the season while William & Mary improves to 4-2. It is the first time in history the Tribe has beaten the Tar Heels although there was a tie in the series in 1987.
Carolina took 17 shots in the game including five by Tobin Heath and three each by Yael Averbuch and Casey Nogueira.
Meghan Walker was outstanding in goal for the Tribe as she made eight saves.
UNC will try to bounce back against Ohio State next Friday at 5 p.m.when it plays Ohio State in the Duke/adidas Classic at Durham, N.C. Next Sunday the Heels will meet San Francisco at noon, also in the Duke/adidas Classic.
