September 17, 2007 | Field Hockey
Sept. 17, 2007

Seniors Rachel Dawson and Jesse Gey led the No. 1 ranked Tar Heel field hockey team to a pair of shutout wins over Old Dominion and Penn State to earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for September 10-16, 2007. Dawson and Gey played key roles in a pair of shutout wins by the top-ranked Tar Heels last weekend. Dawson had a hat trick in Sunday's 6-0 win over No. 7 Penn State and anchored a defense that gave up just one shot in two games. Gey scored the gamewinner in Friday's 3-0 win over No. 13 Old Dominion and against Penn State to give her six game-winning goals on the year. She also had three assists in the Penn State win.
Other nominees:
T.J. YATES
Football, Quarterback
Freshman, Marietta, Ga.
Redshirt freshman quarterback T.J. Yates threw for three touchdowns for the third time in as many games and went over 300 yards passing for the second straight week in Carolina's 22-20 loss to Virginia. He finished 25 for 38 for 339 yards. He connected with Hakeem Nicks on scoring plays of 4 and 53 yards and with tight end Richard Quinn for 2 yards. The 339 yards by Yates marks the ninth-most passing yards in a game by a Tar Heel (last week he had 344 at ECU, the seventh-most). The 339 yards by Yates are the most passing and most total offense yards ever by a Tar Heel against Virginia. The previous passing high was 281 by Kevin Anthony in 1984. The previous total offense high was 328 by Derrick Fenner in 1986 (all 328 yards by Fenner were rushing).
BILL DWORSKY
Men's Soccer, Forward
Sophomore, Huntsville, Ala.
Dworsky's 73rd-minute goal lifted the Tar Heels to a 1-0 win at NC State Saturday for Carolina's first ACC opening victory since 2004. Dworsky has scored three times over the team's last two victories to rank second in the league in goals. He leads UNC and is tied for fourth in the ACC with seven points on the season, which matches his total for all of last season through just five outings.
MEGAN KALTENBACH
Cross Country
Senior, Aurora, Colo.
Megan Kaltenbach captured the individual title at the Mountaineer Open pacing the Tar Heels to the team title. Kaltenbach finished the 5K course in 17:59.55 more than 30 seconds faster than her next nearest competitor. The race was the first appearance on the season for Kaltenbach after sitting out Carolina's season-opening meet. An all-ACC selection a year ago, Kaltenbach, was one of five Tar Heels to finish in the top seven at the Mountaineer Open.
