CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Katelyn Falgowski scored the first two goals of her career and added two assists Thursday as the top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat visiting Appalachian State on a rainy evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The win was the fourth consecutive shutout for UNC (9-0) and marked the second game in a row in which the Tar Heels have not given up a shot.
"We're excited that we won the game and got another shutout," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Our goal is to defend our home with passion every game. We got to play a lot of people, score a lot of goals. I thought there was some big-time passing that was going on and some very unselfish play by our kids."
Falgowski, a midfielder from Landenberg, Pa., scored the Tar Heels' first goal just 3:40 into the game on a penalty corner, UNC's second of the evening. Senior Rachel Dawson had the assist, her first of the year. Senior Jesse Gey made it 2-0 just over four minutes later with a hard shot from the top of the circle. Senior Laree Beans tipped in a pass from Falgowski to make it 3-0 13:38 into the game.
The Tar Heels then added two more goals in just over a minute. At the 15:45 mark, Falgowski sent the ball across the cage from the left side and senior Alli Tanner got her stick on in just in front of the goal to make the score 4-0. It took 1:03 for UNC to make it 5-0, with Falgowski tipping in a ball sent in by senior Liz Morris from the left of the goal. In the final seconds of the first half, sophomore Melanie Brill took the initial shot on a penalty corner. ASU's Denise Adams made the save, but the ball came back out to Brill, who blasted it into the goal on her second try.
UNC's only goal of the second half came late in the game, when senior Xan Funk sent a pass in to sophomore Danielle Forword, who shot the ball past Adams to make the score 7-0.
Carolina totaled 36 shots on the night and Adams, a sophomore, made 19 saves. The Mountaineers fall to 2-6 with the loss.
UNC returns to action on Saturday, hosting Duke for a 1 p.m. game at Henry Stadium. The game is the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for the Tar Heels and also kicks off the 2007-08 Carlyle Cup race, the annual competition between North Carolina and Duke.
The teams split last season's matchups. The host Blue Devils won 2-1 in overtime in the regular-season meeting last September. UNC beat Duke 2-0 in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill in November.
