GREENSBORO , N.C. - North Carolina's Danielle Forword, a junior from East London, South Africa, has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week following the season's first weekend of action. A forward for the top-ranked Tar Heels, Forword scored five goals in UNC's first two games.
On Saturday, she finished with a career-high four goals in a 6-0 win over No. 9 Michigan. Her total was one shy of the school single-game record of five. On Sunday against No. 5 Iowa, Forword scored the opening goal against the Hawkeyes in a game that Carolina lost 3-2.
Her five goals over the weekend are nearly half as many as her total from the 2007 season, when she scored 11 to rank third on the Tar Heel team that set a school record for goals and led the NCAA in goals per game.
The Tar Heels (1-1) will look to rebound from the loss to Iowa this Friday, as they travel to take on Wake Forest in a non-conference matchup. Game time at Kentner stadium is 7 p.m.
On Sunday, UNC will open the 2008 home schedule against Georgetown at Francis E. Henry Stadium at 1 p.m. Fans should come early to enjoy the annual Field Hockey Field Day, which begins at 11 a.m. on the Navy Field practice turf beside Henry Stadium. The event, which is free to all, will include inflatable games, sno cones and cotton candy.
