CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A season-high 15 blocks helped propel the North Carolina volleyball team to its second consecutive sweep in the Carolina Classic on Saturday as the Tar Heels took down Georgetown 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-16). Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland led the attack with seven kills on a .538 hitting percentage with a team-high nine blocks. Suzanne Haydel led the Tar Heels in kills for the second consecutive match with an even dozen. Carolina will take on Davidson in the finale of the Carolina Classic at 7 p.m. in the Smith Center.
The Tar Heels got off to a great start once again as they converted 11 of 15 sideout chances in the opening set and used four kills from Heather Brooks to take the set 25-16. Carolina found itself in an early hole but battled back to even the score at 10-10 before reeling off eight consecutive points to take a commanding 18-10 lead. Georgetown's attempt to chip away at the deficit would not develop as Carolina cruised to the 25-16 opening set win.
Stephanie Jansma distributed 12 assists in the second set as Carolina posted another 25-16 win. The outside hitters carried the Tar Heels with Megan Owens and Suzanne Haydel each tallying four kills apiece, while the middles Heather Brooks and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland picked up a pair. Hanson-Tuntland also turned away three shots in the second frame as Carolina hit a match-high .364.
The block party would come out in the third and eventual final set as the Tar Heels combined for eight blocks in another 25-16 win. Haydel and Hanson-Tuntland carried the load once again with Haydel leading the charge with five more kills. Hanson-Tuntland slammed down three kills while picking up four blocks on the defensive side. Freshman Aleksandra Georgieva turned in a solid defensive performance on the back row with six digs in the final set.
Jansma fell just two assists shy of 30 on the day, but earned her first double-double of the season by picking up 10 digs for the Tar Heels. Brianna Eskola led the Tar Heels in digs with 12, while Georgieva chipped in 10.
With the 3-0 win over Georgetown the Tar Heels locked up the Carolina Classic title with their perfect 2-0 record through the first two matches. Missouri State and Georgetown will face off at 4:30 p.m. before the Tar Heels take on Davidson at 7 p.m.
