GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league. O'Donnell becomes the third Tar Heel in the past six weeks to garner player of the week honors as she helped second-ranked UNC improve to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC with wins over ninth-ranked Boston College (Oct. 10) and No. 14 Duke (Oct. 11).
O'Donnell played all 70 minutes in goal Saturday as the Tar Heels earned their ACC-record-tying ninth consecutive shutout in a 4-0 win against the Eagles. She made four saves and faced 10 penalty corners, a season-high by a Carolina opponent.
In North Carolina's 2-1 victory in a non-conference game at Duke on Sunday, O'Donnell again played all 70 minutes inside the cage, tallied five saves, and allowed just one goal in 12 shots faced (six on goal).
The Collegeville, Pa., native has seen action in nine games this season, including her two starts over the weekend when junior goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer was sidelined by an injury. O'Donnell has logged 385 minutes in goal this fall and has allowed only one score for a 0.18 goals-against average.
North Carolina will return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against third-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. The Tar Heels then travel to Harrisonburg to face James Madison on Sunday.
Tar Heels previous honored with the ACC award this season are senior Danielle Forword (Co-Player of the Week on Sept. 22) and senior Melanie Brill (Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 5.)
