Field Hockey Team Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

North Carolina's field hockey team defeated top-ranked and previously unbeaten Maryland, 3-2, to win the 2009 NCAA championship and earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for November 16-22. Senior captain Danielle Forword scored the game-winning goal on a penalty corner with 11.7 seconds to play to give the Tar Heels and head coach Karen Shelton their sixth field hockey title.

Sophomore midfielder Kirk Urso assisted on both scores in Carolina's 2-0 win over Brown in the NCAA Tournament Second Round Sunday. He set up Billy Schuler's header with a free kick into the box in the 20th minute, and fed Alex Dixon for a quick counter attack goal to put the game away in the 89th minute. The Lombard, Ill., native leads the Tar Heels with six assists on the season.

North Carolina safety Deunta Williams picked off three passes and returned them for 103 yards in a 31-13 victory over Boston College. Williams nearly scored on his last interception of the day, returning it 39 yards to the BC 1-yard line. Carolina scored on the next play. Williams led a defense that forced six turnovers and held the Eagles' to 198 total yards. It is the second consecutive week a UNC defensive back has picked off three passes. Williams now has six interceptions for 114 yards on the season. He ranks third all-time at UNC with 12 career interceptions.

Eveland was named a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America for the second successive year last week while also helping lead the Tar Heel defense to its eighth straight shutout and a 1-0 win over Maryland in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Carolina's defense has not allowed a goal in 742 minutes and three seconds (earlier this year the defense also had a scoreless streak of 742 minutes and 15 seconds) and the eight successive complete shutout wins are the most in a row for the Tar Heels since 1997.

Redshirt sophomore David MacDonald swept the springboard diving events (there was no platform diving at USC) by wide margins and shattered the UNC school records in both one- and three-meter diving in the process at the 2009 Gamecock Invitational, helping leads the Tar Heels to the team title. MacDonald won the three-meter event with 447.50 points, a score that was 56.70 points ahead of second-place Rylan Ridenour of South Carolina. MacDonald's score of 447.50 points broke the old school record of 413.25 set by Ryan Funderburk in 2007. MacDonald won the one-meter event with 367.45 points, a score that was 15.90 points ahead of second-place Ryland Ridenour of South Carolina. MacDonald's score of 367.45 points broke the old school record of 345.85 set by Ryan Funderburk in 2006.

Swimming in her first meet of the year, Alison Clemens won two individual events and also earned a second place and a third place finish as the Tar Heel women's swimming and diving team eased to the championship of the Gamecock Invitational. Clemens won the 100 breast in 1:04.06, the seventh fastest time in the ACC this year; finished second in the 200 breast in 2:16.75, the third fastest time in the ACC this year; finished third in the 200 IM in 2:04.04, the sixth fastest time in the ACC this year; and won the 400 IM in 4:22.84, the sixth fastest time in the ACC this year.
