GREENSBORO, N.C. - Five Tar Heels headline the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Team, announced Wednesday by the league. Illse Davids, Katelyn Falgowski, Danielle Forword, Jackie Kintzer and Kelsey Kolojejchick were selected to the 18-member team by a vote of the ACC coaches.
"I'm incredibly proud of the large representation for the University of North Carolina," said UNC coach Karen Shelton. "Our girls have played hard all season and are well-deserving of this recognition."
After UNC's five, the team includes four players from Maryland, three each from Virginia and Wake Forest, two from Duke and one from Boston College.
Davids, a senior midfielder from Plumstead, South Africa, and Falgowski, a junior midfielder from Landenberg, Pa., were honored for the third year in a row. Forword, a senior forward from East London, South Africa; Kintzer, a junior goalkeeper from Robesonia, Pa.; and Kolojejchick, a freshman midfielder from Larksville, Pa., earned the ACC honor for the first time.
Kolojejchick, who ranks second on the team in goals with 13 this season, was the only freshman named to the squad.
Maryland, which won the regular-season ACC title, swept the individual awards, with Katie O'Donnell named ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Emma Thomas named ACC Defensive Player of the Year and Missy Meharg named ACC Coach of the Year. O'Donnell won the award for the third year in a row, and Meharg was honored for the fifth time in her career after leading the Terrapins to their first-ever undefeated regular season.
The ACC Freshman of the Year award will be announced following the conference championship game on Nov. 8.
Tournament play opens Thursday at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Fourth-seeded Wake Forest and fifth-seeded Boston College meet at 1 p.m., and third-seeded Virginia meets sixth-seeded Duke at 3:30. The winners advance to Friday's semifinals, with the Game 1 winner facing top-seeded Maryland at 4 p.m. and the second-seeded Tar Heels facing the Duke-Virginia winner at 6:30 p.m. The championship game is set for noon on Sunday.
