Shelton Honored As South Region's Top Coach

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina field hockey coach Karen Shelton has been honored as the South Region Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), which announced the award on Tuesday. Shelton, in her 29th season at UNC, is one of five regional winners now in the running for NFHCA Division I National Coach of the Year honors.
The winner of the national award will be announced at the NFHCA Coaches' Recognition Luncheon on Jan. 8, 2010, in Richmond, Va. Other regional winners for 2009 are: Northeast Region - Ainslee Lamb (Boston College); MidAtlantic Region - Denise Zelenak (Drexel); Mideast Region - Pam Stuper (Yale); and West Region - Rolf van de Kerkhof (Michigan State).
Shelton, a four-time National Coach of the Year and eight-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year, guided North Carolina to a 20-2 overall record and the school's sixth NCAA field hockey championship in 2009. The Tar Heels claimed the national title with a 3-2 win over top-ranked and previously undefeated Maryland Nov. 22 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
A member of the NFHCA Hall of Fame and the U.S. Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame, Shelton has a career record of 482-133-9.
