Four From UNC Named To All-ACC Academic Field Hockey Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, announced Friday by the league. Senior Britt van Beek, junior Riley Foster, sophomore Elizabeth Drazdowski and freshman Taryn Gjurich earned spots on the squad.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Foster, an exercise and sport science major from Fort Worth, Texas, was named to the team for the third year in a row.
Drazdowski, a communication studies major from Mountain Top, Pa., was named to the squad for the second year in a row. After taking a redshirt season in her first year at UNC, she is a sophomore in eligibility but in her junior year academically.
Van Beek, an exercise and sport science major from Den Bosch, The Netherlands, earned the honor for the first time in her career. The team captain, she also earned All-ACC and second-team All-America honors for the 2008 season.
Gjurich, in her first year on the UNC squad, is a political science major from Hatfield, Pa.
oston College and Maryland led the league with seven selections to the 30-member squad, followed by Duke with six selections. North Carolina received four honors while Virginia and Wake Forest tallied three members.
Maryland's Susie Rowe was honored as the ACC Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year.
