IOWA CITY, Iowa - Five different players scored for the North Carolina field hockey team Sunday as the fourth-ranked Tar Heels beat host Iowa 5-0 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge to improve to 2-0 on the season. Junior Katelyn Falgowski got the gamewinner in the 11th minute and UNC rolled to a four-goal lead before halftime at Grant Field.
"It was a great weekend for us, in particular the first half today," North Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "We played exceptionally well, had a lot of possessions and, most important, we were able to score goals. We put some points on the board today.
"I thought we played with heart and intensity, and we played a fast tempo, which I like. It was a great weekend overall, to beat two talented Big Ten teams."
The Tar Heels topped No. 19 Michigan 2-1 Saturday in UNC's first game of the weekend. In that contest, Carolina had 21 shots, but only scored twice. On Sunday, 13 first-half shots became four goals, and the Tar Heels finished with 16 shots for the game. No. 9 Iowa, which lost 3-2 to Wake Forest on Saturday, fell to 0-2 on the season.
Falgowski's goal was chipped in close to the cage off a pass from junior Elizabeth Drazdowski. The Tar Heels scored again just over a minute later, when sophomore reserve Elizabeth Stephens deflected a pass from junior Jen Slocum. In the 28th minute of play, Drazdowski scored the third goal, also off a deflection. Freshman Kelsey Kolojejchick assisted on the play.
Carolina went up 4-0 just before halftime, when senior Melanie Brill scored on a penalty corner with 31 seconds remaining in the period. Falgowski and senior Riley Foster earned assists.
The final goal came in the 41st minute, when Kolojejchick scored on a corner deflection, assisted by Falgowski. The goal was the second of the weekend for the freshman, who had the gamewinner on Saturday against Michigan.
Junior Jackie Kintzer played the first half in goal for the Tar Heels, and senior Brianna O'Donnell took over for the second to share UNC's first shutout of the season. The Hawkeyes had all six of their shots and all four corners in the second half.
Next up for the Tar Heels is their first home game of the season. UNC will host No. 2 Wake Forest Friday at 6 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
