CHAPEL HILL - Soccer midfielder Tobin Heath and field hockey mifdfielder Kelsey Kolojejchick are the Progress Energy Tar Heels of the Week for August 24-30, 2009, after leading their respective programs to successful weekends.
Heath, a senior from Basking Ridge, N.J., led the Tar Heels to two wins in the 2009 Carolina Nike Classic. Heath had two goals and an assist in Carolina's 4-0 victory over UCF on August 28, she helped lead a stellar defensive effort in UNC's 1-0 victory over UNC Greensboro August 30. Heath assisted on Courtney Jones' game-winning goal against UCF and then scored two goals of her own, both of the spectacular variety. She scored late in the first half to put the Tar Heels up 2-0 over the Knights on a 30-yard curving shot to the far post from the left side. Early in the second half, she made it 3-0 when she slid in the box to her knees to head a one-hop feed from Nikki Washington over the UCF keeper's head.
Kolojejchick, a freshman from Larksville, Pa., scored two goals and added an assist over the weekend as UNC beat No. 19 Michigan and No. 9 Iowa at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, hosted by Iowa. In her first action as a Tar Heel, Kolojejchick scored the game winner Saturday in the 64th minute of play of a 2-1 win over the Wolverines. On Sunday against Iowa, she scored UNC's final goal of the 5-0 victory, finding the net on a penalty corner in the 41st minute of play. She also assisted on goal against the Hawkeyes. Kolojejchick's strong start comes despite the fact she missed the first week of Carolina's preseason while representing the U.S. at the Junior World Cup.
