CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team scored just over a minute into Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Duke and went on to a 7-0 win against the visiting Blue Devils on a rainy afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC improved to 10-0 overall with the win, its seventh consecutive shutout. Duke, ranked No. 12 nationally, fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in ACC play.
The victory earned UNC a point in the battle for the 2009-10 Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between Duke and Carolina.
Freshman Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany scored the gamewinner for UNC in the second minute of play. On the Tar Heels' first penalty corner of the afternoon, senior Melanie Brill sent her initial hit toward Gaudioso Radvany in front of the goal, and the forward deflected it up and into the cage to put Carolina ahead 1-0.
Twelve minutes later the Tar Heels scored again, on their third penalty corner of the game. Brill again took the initial hit, but her shot was saved. Freshman Kelsey Kolojejchick grabbed the rebound on the right side of the cage and sent it past Duke keeper Samantha Nelson to put UNC up 2-0.
In the 17th minute of play, sophomore Charlotte Verstraten picked up her second goal of the season, sending a ball from the left side of the cage into its upper right corner.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Tar Heels picked up another goal when junior Katelyn Falgowski capitalized on a Duke turnover, driving in from the right side to send a shot into the left side of the cage.
UNC scored a fifth time in the final seconds of the first half. On the fourth penalty corner of game, Carolina's initial shot was saved, but Kolojejchick again gathered the rebound and shot the ball past Nelson to up the score to 5-0 at the break. The Tar Heels outshot Duke 17-1 in the half and managed to score on three of their four penalty corner opportunities.
Carolina added two more goals in the second half, both on penalty corners and within about 90 seconds of each other. In the 42nd minute, senior captain Danielle Forword send a hard shot into the goal, assisted by senior Riley Foster on the push-in and Falgowski on the stick stop. Brill took the initial shot on the next corner, scoring her team-high 14th goal of the season. Foster and Falgowski again had the assists.
On the afternoon, UNC totaled 23 shots and nine corners, while Duke had three shots and no corners. Duke goalkeepers Samantha Nelson and Micaela Paterson combined for eight saves. Junior Jackie Kintzer and senior Brianna O'Donnell shared the shutout for UNC, with O'Donnell making one save.
Next up for Carolina is a trip to play Wake Forest next Saturday afternoon. The two met in Chapel Hill on Sept. 4, with UNC winning 4-1. Although UNC and Wake will meet twice this season, only one game - next weekend's contest at the Demon Deacons' Kentner Stadium -- counts in the ACC standings.
Carolina's next home game is Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. against Boston College. The following day, on Oct. 11, the Tar Heels will travel to Durham for a second matchup with Duke.
